They also wanted to introduce several new NWSL teams to their audience that had recently been added to the league. The challenge was that these teams did not yet have any highlights. Scripps needed team-tailored visuals that were attention grabbing, dynamic, and also still clean and in alignment with the broader Scripps Sports broadcast Identity. To pull this off, we built on top of the breadth and richness of each teams branding; colors, crests, etc, carefully augmenting each with texture, depth, light, and atmosphere. It took time to dial-in consistent details in anticipation of many possible variations across a variety of deliverables, from fully customizable bumpers, to transitions, tags, and sponsor cards. The effort paid off though, as the client was happy, we were still within budget, the work looked great, and the season kicked off without a hitch. Goal animations, pre-game power-ups, and even noise meters had to be built from the ground up. High energy, dynamic, and dimensional motion utilizing the (newly) seamless LEDs wrapped around the scoreboard was key. The goal was to create elements that extended cleanly all the way around the center hung, fully utilizing that space to build energy with our visuals. Forced perspective, aka anamorphic 3D, was also an exciting avenue to pull this off with; pushing elements out of the frame and directly towards the audience. Overall, the project was extremely challenging but also rewarding as an opportunity to explore new creative concepts and literal perspectives. After an initial set of moodboards and styleframes, I jumped into some R&amp;D. Cinema 4D, Redshift, and After Effects would make quick work of the basics (data visualizations, gummies, pills, etc), however, with several of the explainer shots intentionally left clean and minimal; nailing a single character’s posture and expression was crucial to tell the story. Thus, I needed a robust solution. While Adobe’s Mixamo mocap data works well with both Cinema 4D and Unreal Engine for the overall body movements, it was Unreal’s customizable Metahuman rig that ultimately achieved the most efficient and highest production value results. I was able to adjust facial features, complexion, and clothing with ease. Syncing my iPhone camera to Unreal, I was also able to see and record my own facial expressions in real-time, mapped onto the Metahuman rig. The immediacy of that feedback really made the difference, as I could see how my own facial performance capture blended with the Mixamo body mocap data, and without rendering to be able to adjust my performance. This really elevated the nuance and detail to the animation, nailing the tone and expressiveness we needed, and delivered with greater efficiency than I could have done on my own straight in C4D. With about 2.5 weeks from kickoff to final delivery for over 4 minutes of animation, organization and clear communication was vital. Everyone stepped up together and all were happy with the results. Debuting in primetime on&nbsp;The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper, the episode ranked #1 in cable news in the (P25-54) demo and set a series-best ratings record. After initial explorations into vibrant and more graphical cyberpunk aesthetics, we landed with the client on a colder and more ominous visual tone, blurring the macro and micro into an abstraction of mechanized and brutalist forms. It was within this abstracted space that we developed the title sequence and custom explainers, in tandem with toolkitted tweets, and headlines. We dug extensively for imagery to highlight the diverse voices and perspectives that are often overlooked from that era.
